The Lycos portal has extended facilities for its webmail users, to include a virtual hard drive allowing users to drag and drop files from Windows into an online storage area; ideal for small scale backups.
Users will be allowed to store any type of file including, MP3, Video, PDF and Excel files, whether there will be any limitation on executables is unknown. Together with this extension of facilities storage is also to be extended to 1GB per user from mid September.
Also in this round of improvements the webmail synchronisation with Outlook has been extended to cover synchronisation of online calendar information. Lycos announced a significant rise in the take-up of the online calendar once users discovered it synchronised with Outlook.
"As internet connection speeds become faster, and PC users become more mobile, we see a demand for a virtual PC," said Wessel van Rensburg, Lycos UK email and mobile product manager.
"The new interface is a step in that direction. It makes the use of web-based email and storage more compelling because it can be accessed and managed from any PC using familiar software anywhere in the world."
