BCS Press Release 01/12/04

Europe's uniting body for professional IT societies - the Council of European Professional Informatics Societies (CEPIS) - has elected Geoff McMullen, former president of the British Computer Society as its new president elect. Following the statutory rules, Geoff McMullen will take over the CEPIS presidency from acting president Jouko Ruissalo from the Finnish Computer Society in November 2005.

As well as being BCS president, Geoff McMullen has also held the position of Honorary Secretary of CEPIS - a non-profit organization that unites 37 Professional Informatics Societies from 33 countries across Europe and represents over 200,000 professionals across the pan European ICT sector.

Geoff McMullen has been a key figure in the UK's computing and IT world since 1963. He has held many senior IT management positions in the public and private sectors and undertaken a variety of consulting assignments. From 1994 to 2000 he served as a member of the board of the British Computer Society (BCS). In 2001 and 2002 he was president of the BCS. He is a firm believer in the value of pan-European collaboration and his 40 years' experience of European linked IT activities, both commercially and in the public sector, has given him enormous experience in successful IT system implementation. His particular area of expertise and interest for CEPIS is IT skills.

In welcoming Geoff McMullen's forthcoming CEPIS appointment, BCS chief executive David Clarke said: "Geoff is a well know, active and highly popular figure within the Society. His new role will be good for both the BCS and CEPIS. In particular, Geoff will seek to engage UK IT professionals more fully with their other European counterparts as well pushing the UK's IT profile more centre stage in the building of a stronger IT fraternity and voice within the European community."
